Luke 17:7-10

“And which of you having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field ‘Come and sit at once and sit down to eat?’ But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me til i have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ “

Here we have the disciples approaching Jesus saying “Increase our faith.” Just like in matthew 17:19-21, we see something similar, faith plays a pivotal role in our walks with Christ.
So what exactly does this have to do with faith? Romans 3:12 tells us “they have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one.”
To be unprofitable, is to be useless to God or HIs good purposes. One who who has no faith in Christ is this way.
Luke 12:37 draws us a similar picture, “Blessed are those servants whom the master when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them.” The blessing is on those who watch attentively for their masters return. Jesus was speaking about faithful and obedient service. One day Jesus will return to make an accounting of how people served Him. Jesus pointed out that the faithful servant will be served by Jesus on HIs return. Faithfulness will be rewarded.
Jesus calls us to a life of service. To exercise a life of humility and meekness. While we are doing those duties, christ wants us to wait for His return with an earnest expectation. To be attentive, and mindful of His return. We are the servants in this Chapter. Christ is telling us to “prepare for supper..” We don't get thanked because they are things we ought to be doing.
This was a bit harder for me to grasp but knowing that the lord wants me to uphold my post until he gets back, is mind blowing. In the end we will hear Well done my good and faithful servant.
